Let's do this!

In this blog I will be trying to chronicle interactions on a new initiative. I am starting to work on a project that will help to educate police departments, specifically for their grade school education and instruction sessions. (Hopefully this will turn quickly into a 'we')

Here is the why:

I have taught my kids about cyber security since they were old enough to hold an tablet. This however doesn't scale well. I have also reached out to my kids schools to talk and teach about Cyber Security there. Again, this doesn't scale well. It however hit me when I was talking to Ben at DerbyCon 2017, that I'm just some random person to these kids, someone easily ignored and only around once a year. I remembered back to one of my kid's school events where the police officer that was talking to them had their undivided attention. I remembered how they talked about strangers and drugs and bullies. Why not one more topic? Why not cyber security? The great thing about doing it as this at the police department level is that they teach at all the schools in the county, not just the one my kids go to. I think that teaching it at this level, elementary, middle school, high school, we can make an investment at putting a dent in this thing.

Here was my first contact email with my local PD:

Hi, My name is Rob Fuller. I'm a XXXXXX County resident and also a Cyber Security Professional. I work with an organization called Hackers for Charity and one of our programs is to reach out to local police departments that do education in schools and help/assist/create cyber security pieces to that education. My number is +1 XXX-XXX-XXXX, my email address is XXXXXXX@XXXXXX. I would love to volunteer or help with anything I can.

I have created a Google Folder that will house all of our content and emails so that you might follow along in your county/city/state/town.

Want to do the same? I will be producing blog posts and with the aide of Johnny and Ben hopefully open source curriculum that can be used in your local towns, cities. The reason it will be open source is because every town, city, county is different, and we will definitely want to improve as we go along and get to know about your experiences with your local PD.

Do you already have curriculum designed for K-12? Is you or your organization ok with donating it to make this project better? Please reach out: rob - at - room362.com
